Tiger Creek Preserve: Discover Florida’s Nature Escape

It was another beautiful day in Florida, perfect for outdoor adventure, so we decided to hit the trails again. This time we headed to Tiger Creek Preserve in Lake Wales, known for its natural beauty. With our hiking gear in tow and a sense of anticipation, we looked forward to immersing ourselves in the lush landscapes and vibrant wildlife the preserve has to offer.

Picturesque Ridge Scenic Highway

The drive to Tiger Creek Preserve is along the Ridge Scenic Highway, a stunning 38-mile stretch located on the Lake Wales Ridge in Central Florida. This scenic byway offers breathtaking views of the unique landscape characterised by rolling hills, lush forests, and sparkling lakes. Known for its high elevation compared to much of Florida, the highway provides a refreshing change in scenery and a chance to experience the state’s natural beauty from a different perspective.

In addition to its scenic allure, the Ridge Scenic Highway is steeped in history. The Lake Wales Ridge is one of the oldest geological formations in Florida, and its unique elevation has contributed to the development of various ecosystems. Along the highway, you can find several parks and nature preserves, offering hiking trails and recreational opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts.

After departing from the Scenic Highway, we drove an additional five miles along a bumpy orange-sandy road, flanked by vibrant orange groves on either side. Mile after mile, we passed trees heavy with ripe oranges, just waiting to be picked and transformed into delicious Florida orange juice.

Tiger Creek Preserve

Upon arriving at the secluded Tiger Creek Preserve, we found parking for about four cars. It was at this moment that I realised we seemed to be miles away from civilisation, surrounded by an incredibly peaceful atmosphere. Spanning 5,000 acres, this preserve has been managed by The Nature Conservancy since 1971. This global private conservation organisation protects and manages over 119 million acres around the world, ensuring the preservation of precious natural areas like this one.

Maps are available at the trailhead, with most trails beginning from Pfundstein. This trail serves as the entry point to several routes, including Patrick Creek Loop and Heron Pond Loop. Hikers can also continue onto the Highlands Loop, which connects to the Creek Bluffs Loop. If you choose to explore the furthest trail, you’ll cover approximately 9.1 miles by the time you return to the parking lot.

The Ancient Islands

Tiger Creek Preserve is situated on Florida’s oldest and highest landmass, known as the Lake Wales Ridge. This remarkable sandy ridge, often described as Florida’s “Ancient Islands,” stretches an impressive 150 miles through central Florida and is even visible from space. As we walked along the trail, it quickly became clear just how different the landscape was from other hiking spots we had explored. Even though our visit took place during winter, the area was still vibrant with greenery and textures that caught our attention.

This is a lovely spot along the Pfundstein Trail, where I took a moment to sit and soak in the beauty and ambiance of the surroundings. While I was there, I noticed a painted rock resting on top of the post next to the bench. Geocaching is a popular pastime in Florida, where people exchange these painted stones at designated geographical locations, adding a fun and artistic touch to the outdoor experience.

What Are There So Many Burnt Stumps in Florida?
