I have never taken a gap year or gone off travelling full-time. I just have a full-time job in England and squeeze trips in wherever I can find the time – long weekends, saved-up leave, whatever days off I have going spare. Two decades of doing this on and off adds up to more than you’d think: 29 countries, 23 U.S. states, 4 Canadian provinces, 192,000 miles so far. [The full story →]
Road Trips & States 🇺🇸

The states thing started almost by accident with a trip to Florida back in 2000, then an American West road trip in 2010 (Nevada, Utah and Wyoming in one go) is really what got me hooked properly. I came home from that one already looking up flights for the next trip. Since then I’ve added Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon, Washington and a fair few more. 23 down, 27 left. Eventually I hope to finish all 50 states, but there is no rush[Explore the States Challenge →]
Cruising 🌊

This one wasn’t really planned. I booked a cruise to Alaska mainly to tick another state off the list, and ended up spending most of the trip on the balcony watching glaciers drift past instead of doing much else. Woke up in a different port most mornings, sometimes a busy one, sometimes just a quiet stretch of turquoise water with nothing around. Eight cruises later I’m already looking at the next one. UK & Europe
Not everything needs a long-haul flight attached to it. Some of the trips I’ve enjoyed most have been a few hours away at most — a waterfall in the Scottish Highlands I only found because I got lost, a weekend somewhere in Europe that turned into three extra days because I couldn’t be bothered to leave. The Journey Continues
Road trip or cruise, it’s honestly the same feeling for me either way — new place, new thing to figure out, a good story to bring home. That’s about as much of a plan as I’ve ever had for any of this.

One of my goals is to visit as many states here in the US as well. There are so many things to see and do. It will take many years to accomplish. But the earlier the better. Thank you for being our guide.
Ahhh I wish I lived closer! I would love to travel around all these States! A long road trip!
