It was another beautiful day in Florida, perfect for outdoor adventure, so we decided to hit the trails again. This time we headed to Tiger Creek Preserve in Lake Wales, known for its natural beauty. With our hiking gear in tow and a sense of anticipation, we looked forward to immersing ourselves in the lush landscapes and vibrant wildlife the preserve has to offer.

Picturesque Ridge Scenic Highway
The drive to Tiger Creek Preserve is along the Ridge Scenic Highway, a stunning 38-mile stretch located on the Lake Wales Ridge in Central Florida. This scenic byway offers breathtaking views of the unique landscape characterised by rolling hills, lush forests, and sparkling lakes. Known for its high elevation compared to much of Florida, the highway provides a refreshing change in scenery and a chance to experience the state’s natural beauty from a different perspective.
In addition to its scenic allure, the Ridge Scenic Highway is steeped in history. The Lake Wales Ridge is one of the oldest geological formations in Florida, and its unique elevation has contributed to the development of various ecosystems. Along the highway, you can find several parks and nature preserves, offering hiking trails and recreational opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts.
After departing from the Scenic Highway, we drove an additional five miles along a bumpy orange-sandy road, flanked by vibrant orange groves on either side. Mile after mile, we passed trees heavy with ripe oranges, just waiting to be picked and transformed into delicious Florida orange juice.
Tiger Creek Preserve
Upon arriving at the secluded Tiger Creek Preserve, we found parking for about four cars. It was at this moment that I realised we seemed to be miles away from civilisation, surrounded by an incredibly peaceful atmosphere. Spanning 5,000 acres, this preserve has been managed by The Nature Conservancy since 1971. This global private conservation organisation protects and manages over 119 million acres around the world, ensuring the preservation of precious natural areas like this one.
Maps are available at the trailhead, with most trails beginning from Pfundstein. This trail serves as the entry point to several routes, including Patrick Creek Loop and Heron Pond Loop. Hikers can also continue onto the Highlands Loop, which connects to the Creek Bluffs Loop. If you choose to explore the furthest trail, you’ll cover approximately 9.1 miles by the time you return to the parking lot.
The Ancient Islands
Tiger Creek Preserve is situated on Florida’s oldest and highest landmass, known as the Lake Wales Ridge. This remarkable sandy ridge, often described as Florida’s “Ancient Islands,” stretches an impressive 150 miles through central Florida and is even visible from space. Its distinctive topography fosters a variety of ecosystems, contributing significantly to the area’s ecological importance.
The Lake Wales Ridge is not just a geological wonder but also a critical habitat, housing the highest concentration of endangered and threatened plant species in the United States. This unique environment is home to many rare flora, some of which cannot be found anywhere else. Sadly, only about 10% of the original native habitat remains, underscoring the urgent need for conservation efforts in the region.
Tiger Creek Preserve plays a vital role in safeguarding these delicate ecosystems, offering a sanctuary for diverse plant and animal species. The preserve features a range of habitats, including wetlands, pine forests, and scrubland, each providing unique opportunities for wildlife to flourish. Visiting Tiger Creek Preserve allows you to witness the remarkable biodiversity that thrives in this extraordinary area and to appreciate the ongoing efforts dedicated to preserving Florida’s natural heritage.

Pfundstein Trail
The main access point to the preserve, the Pfundstein Trail serves as a gateway to several other trails. This easy-to-moderate trail offers a pleasant stroll through lush landscapes, showcasing the vibrant flora and fauna that call Tiger Creek home. Along the way, hikers can enjoy scenic views and ample opportunities for wildlife spotting.
Patrick Creek Loop
Branching off from Pfundstein, the Patrick Creek Loop provides a longer hike through varied ecosystems. This trail meanders alongside Patrick Creek, where hikers can appreciate the tranquil sounds of flowing water and observe a variety of plant species. The loop is relatively easy and ideal for families or those looking for a leisurely trek.
Heron Pond Loop
Another option accessible from Pfundstein, the Heron Pond Loop offers a slightly more challenging hike. This trail leads through areas rich in wetlands, providing opportunities to spot herons and other waterfowl. The lush surroundings and picturesque pond make this loop a favorite among birdwatchers and nature photographers.
Highlands Loop
For those seeking a longer adventure, the Highlands Loop connects to the Creek Bluffs Loop, creating a more extensive hiking experience. This trail provides a more rugged terrain and showcases some of the unique geological features of the Lake Wales Ridge. By completing this loop, hikers can cover approximately 9.1 miles, making it suitable for those looking to immerse themselves fully in the preserve’s natural beauty.
Trail Features
Whether you’re looking for a short stroll or an all-day adventure, the trails at Tiger Creek Preserve offer something for everyone. With stunning scenery and the chance to connect with nature, a hike here is sure to be a memorable experience.
As we walked along the trail, it quickly became clear just how different the landscape was from other hiking spots we had explored. The diversity of plant life was striking; numerous species of plants and shrubs surrounded us, each contributing to the unique ecosystem of the preserve. Even though our visit took place during winter, the area was still vibrant with greenery and textures that caught our attention.
This is a lovely spot along the Pfundstein Trail, where I took a moment to sit and soak in the beauty and ambiance of the surroundings. While I was there, I noticed a painted rock resting on top of the post next to the bench. Geocaching is a popular pastime in Florida, where people exchange these painted stones at designated geographical locations, adding a fun and artistic touch to the outdoor experience.
What Are There So Many Burnt Stumps in Florida?
Burnt stumps are a common sight in Florida, particularly in areas affected by wildfires or controlled burns. These stumps tell a significant story about the state’s fire ecology and the role that fire plays in maintaining healthy ecosystems. Many native plant species in Florida are adapted to fire, relying on it to clear out underbrush and promote new growth.
When a fire sweeps through an area, it can be devastating to the surface vegetation, but many plants, especially certain grasses and wildflowers, have evolved to thrive in post-fire environments. The burnt stumps often serve as reminders of the natural cycles of growth and regeneration that occur in Florida’s diverse landscapes.
In some areas, the charred remains of trees provide habitat for wildlife. Birds and insects can nest in the hollowed-out trunks, while other animals use the decaying wood as a food source. Additionally, these stumps play an important role in the soil’s nutrient cycle, as they decompose and enrich the surrounding earth, paving the way for new plant life to flourish.
A Must For Hikers
If you appreciate the tranquility of nature and enjoy hiking, I highly recommend a visit to Tiger Creek Preserve. This beautiful destination offers a perfect escape for a day outdoors, featuring a diverse array of stunning landscapes to explore, from lush forests to serene wetlands.
As you traverse the trails, you’ll be immersed in the rich biodiversity of the preserve, making every step an adventure in discovery. Whether you’re an avid hiker or a casual walker, there are trails suited to all levels, allowing everyone to experience the natural beauty this area has to offer.
To make the most of your visit, be sure to pack a picnic and plenty of water. The Florida sun can be intense, so staying hydrated is crucial. Finding a scenic spot to enjoy your meal while surrounded by nature adds an extra layer of enjoyment to your outing.
Additionally, it’s wise to bring along bug spray, as insects can be quite active, especially during warmer months. A quick application will help ensure that your hike is as pleasant as possible, allowing you to focus on soaking in the sights and sounds of the preserve without distraction.
In summary, a trip to Tiger Creek Reserve promises a fulfilling outdoor experience, complete with beautiful scenery and opportunities for relaxation. So grab your gear, gather your friends or family, and get ready for a day of adventure in this remarkable natural haven!

We grew up in South Florida and did a lot of hiking there over the years. It reminds me of a few hikes we did in Ocala and Naples. If you visit Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary in Naples, they also have those fire charred trees throughout the hike. This was very nostalgic, thank you for the post. 🙂
This looks like a nice peaceful little hike. The painted rock is pretty cool… I’ve thought about seeking out some geocaching locations in my current city. And that’s an interesting piece of trivia that Florida has the most lightning strikes in the US!
Looks like an amazing place for a hike! Have yet to visit anywhere in Florida but it looks like a great place to visit (I only think of Disney, the Everglades and Miami so it’s great to know more about the state!(

I’m from Florida and we’ve barely hiked any trails here. Time to add hiking Florida trails to our “to-do list”. We do geocaching once in a while and it’s quite fun! Until you get ticks….that only happened once.
I have great memories of going on holiday to Florida as a kid. I’m a fan of hiking so would love to go back again to do some walks.
I’m really enjoying learning more about Florida through your posts. I had always only thought about it in turns of swamps, so it’s great to learn about the different sides to the nature there. Beautiful walking trails at Tiger Creek.
Wow, the Tiger Creek Preserve looks like an amazing place to go for a hike and relax. I will be in Miami in April and hoping to see a few other places in Florida. Thanks for the inspiration!
Thank you! We are in Miami for 5 days, so hoping to visit the Everglades for a day. Is there anything else you would recommend?
I have been to Florida but not for hiking just the attractions. I am shocked. I never expected the landscape to look how it does with the red dirt and the charred trees. It mimicks the Top End of Australia in many ways. Thanks for putting Tiger Creek on the map. I really would love to do this hike one day.
Yes, I thought it looked very Australian.
Ah, one question. Did you find any tigers?
I must admit I’ve never thought about going hiking in Florida but this looks absolutely amazing! Perhaps now I have an excuse to get to Florida sooner!
Tiger Creek looks like a great place to hike, and I echo what others have said about it looking like Australia, especially the burnt trees. You are really showing us another side of Florida with your posts so thank you! #feetdotravel
