The 50 States Challenge 🇺🇸

The 50 States Challenge is a personal or travel goal where individuals aim to visit all 50 states in the United States at least once in their lifetime. It’s a way to explore the incredible diversity of the country, from its iconic landmarks to hidden gems, and experience the unique culture, history, and natural beauty of each state. For some, it’s a leisurely lifetime goal, while others turn it into an adventurous race to see how quickly they can complete all 50.

For me, this adventure began almost by accident. A trip to Florida back in 2000 was my first real taste of the U.S., and something about it stuck with me long after I’d flown home. It wasn’t until an American West road trip in 2010, all canyons, deserts, and wide-open highways, that travel stopped being just a holiday and started becoming something closer to a calling. Somewhere between the Grand Canyon and a diner in the middle of nowhere, the idea took hold: why not see all 50 states?

Living in the UK makes that a little harder than it sounds, so I’ve learned to be resourceful, saving up annual leave and building bigger trips around it, and treating every visit to the U.S. as a chance to tick off somewhere new. It’s slow going from across the Atlantic, but that’s part of the appeal. Each state has given me something different: the hush of a national park at dawn, a conversation with a stranger that turned into the highlight of the trip, a view that stopped me in my tracks. Those moments are what keep me coming back for more.

I haven’t finished the challenge yet, but every trip brings me a little closer, and I’ve stopped minding how long it takes. If I had to pick one standout so far, it would be Wyoming. Nothing quite prepared me for Yellowstone: geysers hissing out of the earth, bison ambling across the road like they owned it, and colours in the hot springs that looked almost too vivid to be real. It wasn’t just another state ticked off a list, it changed the way I thought about travel altogether. Standing at the edge of the Grand Prismatic Spring, steam drifting past in the cold morning air, I found myself falling for something I hadn’t expected: the pull of America’s wild, untouched places. There’s a particular kind of magic in feeling that small next to something that old, and Wyoming was where that first clicked for me. It opened up a whole new way of exploring, one I’ve been chasing ever since. If you want to hear more about that side of my travels, I’ve written about my trip to Yellowstone in more detail here.

  1. One of my goals is to visit as many states here in the US as well. There are so many things to see and do. It will take many years to accomplish. But the earlier the better. Thank you for being our guide.
