In 2010, I ventured into the heart of the American West where the landscapes are epic, the colours are straight out of a painter’s palette, and the adventure never stops. Utah didn’t just meet my expectations—it surpassed them in every spectacular way imaginable.

Arches National Park: Where Rocks Defy Gravity
Arches National Park is a mesmerizing landscape where nature’s artistry is on full display. Located in eastern Utah, near the town of Moab, this iconic park is home to over 2,000 natural sandstone arches, each a testament to the power of wind and water over millions of years.
The most famous of these formations is Delicate Arch, an awe-inspiring structure that has become a symbol of Utah itself. Hiking to Delicate Arch at sunset is a must-do experience, as the golden light illuminates the arch and surrounding red rock, creating a scene that’s nothing short of magical.
Beyond Delicate Arch, the park offers a variety of trails that range from easy walks to challenging hikes, each leading to equally breathtaking viewpoints, like the Double Arch, Landscape Arch, and the Windows section.
Arches National Park isn’t just about the arches, though. The park’s vast desert landscape is dotted with spires, pinnacles, and balanced rocks, all set against a backdrop of deep blue skies and the distant La Sal Mountains.
This dramatic scenery provides endless opportunities for photography, rock climbing, and simply soaking in the serenity of the high desert. The park is particularly captivating in the early morning or late afternoon when the changing light brings out the rich colors of the rocks.
Visitors should also take advantage of the park’s dark skies, which offer some of the best stargazing in the region. Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast or a casual traveler, Arches National Park is a destination that will leave you marveling at the natural world’s beauty and creativity.
Bryce Canyon: Hoodoo You Think You Are?
Bryce Canyon National Park is a wonderland of fantastical rock formations that captivate visitors with their unique beauty and vibrant colors. Situated in southern Utah, the park is renowned for its “hoodoos”—tall, thin spires of rock that create a surreal landscape, resembling a forest of stone.
The Bryce Amphitheater, the park’s main feature, is a must-see, with its breathtaking array of these geological formations carved over millennia. Sunrise at Bryce Canyon is particularly spectacular, as the first light of day illuminates the hoodoos, casting an ethereal glow across the amphitheater.
Hikes such as the Queen’s Garden or Peek-a-boo Loop offer immersive experiences, allowing visitors to wind through the hoodoo formations and appreciate their intricate details up close.
The park’s high elevation—over 8,000 feet—ensures cool temperatures and clear skies, making it an excellent spot for outdoor activities year-round. Bryce Canyon’s distinct climate supports a range of ecosystems, from ponderosa pine forests to alpine meadows, adding to its diverse charm.
The park also provides fantastic stargazing opportunities due to its remote location and minimal light pollution. As night falls, the clear, dark skies reveal a breathtaking display of stars and constellations.
Whether you’re hiking along its scenic trails, marveling at the views from the Bryce Point lookout, or simply stargazing under the vast, unpolluted sky, Bryce Canyon offers a memorable and awe-inspiring adventure.
Zion National Park: Channeling My Inner Adventurer
Zion National Park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers, nestled in the southwestern corner of Utah. Known for its dramatic landscapes, Zion offers a striking contrast of towering red rock canyons, lush greenery, and crystal-clear rivers.
The park’s iconic feature is Zion Canyon, carved by the Virgin River over millions of years, which presents a stunning array of towering cliffs and rock formations. One of the park’s most renowned hikes is Angel’s Landing, a challenging ascent that rewards hikers with panoramic views of the canyon below.
For a more leisurely experience, the Riverside Walk leads to the mesmerizing Narrows, where you can wade through the Virgin River surrounded by towering canyon walls.
Zion’s diverse terrain makes it a paradise for adventurers of all levels. The park offers a range of activities from rock climbing and canyoneering to scenic drives and tranquil nature walks.
The scenic drive through the park, especially in the spring and fall, provides spectacular views of the canyon and surrounding peaks, such as the Watchman and the Temple of Sinawava. The lush vegetation and vibrant wildlife add another layer of charm to the park, making it a great destination for both relaxation and exploration.
Whether you’re scaling the heights of Angel’s Landing or taking in the serene beauty of the canyon from the bottom, Zion National Park delivers an unforgettable experience of nature’s grandeur and diversity.
Thrills and Trails in Utah’s Red Canyon
Red Canyon, often overshadowed by its more famous neighbor Bryce Canyon, offers a captivating slice of Utah’s natural beauty that’s well worth exploring. Located along Scenic Byway 12, just a short drive from Bryce Canyon, Red Canyon is a gem renowned for its stunning red rock formations and vibrant hoodoos.
The park’s standout feature is its dramatic, winding rock formations that create an almost otherworldly landscape, with hues of red and orange that seem to glow in the sunlight. The Red Canyon Scenic Drive provides an excellent introduction to the area, with viewpoints that offer sweeping vistas of the unique rock formations and the surrounding landscape.
Hiking enthusiasts will find plenty to love in Red Canyon as well. The park features a variety of trails, including the popular Pink Ledges Trail and the Hoodoo Trail, which meander through the striking terrain and provide up-close views of the hoodoos and other rock formations.
These trails are generally less crowded than those in Bryce Canyon, offering a more tranquil hiking experience amidst the park’s natural splendor. Red Canyon also serves as a gateway to the larger Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, making it an ideal stop for those exploring the wider region.
Whether you’re driving through its scenic routes or hiking among its stunning rock formations, Red Canyon provides a picturesque and serene escape into Utah’s desert beauty.
The Timeless Beauty of Monument Valley
Monument Valley is a landscape straight out of a classic Western film, where the iconic sandstone buttes rise dramatically from the desert floor, creating a scene of surreal beauty.
As you approach the valley, the sheer scale of these towering formations takes your breath away. The vibrant hues of red, orange, and gold shift throughout the day, casting long shadows and creating an ever-changing masterpiece of natural art.
Whether you’re driving along the scenic loop or venturing on a guided tour to explore hidden gems, every turn offers a new perspective that seems almost otherworldly.
But Monument Valley is more than just a stunning backdrop; it’s a place steeped in history and culture. The valley is located on Navajo land, and the Navajo people have a deep connection to this sacred landscape.
As you explore, you’ll find opportunities to learn about their rich traditions, hear stories passed down through generations, and perhaps even experience a taste of Navajo hospitality.
Whether you’re watching the sunrise illuminate the buttes or gazing up at the stars in one of the clearest night skies you’ll ever see, Monument Valley is a destination that stirs the soul and leaves a lasting impression on every traveler who visits.
