Just a short drive from Newport’s bustling downtown, Fort Adams State Park offers a fascinating dive into American military history along with some of the best views in the state. The park is home to Fort Adams, the largest coastal fortification in the United States, which has stood watch over Narragansett Bay since the 19th century.

Continuing along Ocean Avenue, you’ll encounter several small coves and beaches, perfect for a quiet stroll. The road’s natural beauty is complemented by the grandeur of historic estates, making the drive as culturally rich as it is visually stunning.
A Tribute to Automotive Excellence at the Newport Car Museum
For car enthusiasts, Rhode Island boasts a remarkable attraction that’s sure to captivate. Just a short drive from Newport, the Newport Car Museum features an impressive collection of more than 85 vehicles, spanning from timeless vintage models to sleek modern supercars. Housed in a beautifully restored building, the museum stands as a tribute to the art and innovation of automotive design.
The collection is meticulously curated, featuring iconic vehicles from the 1950s to today, including muscle cars, American classics, and European exotics. Just off the coast, a short ferry ride takes you to Block Island, a serene retreat where time seems to slow down. The island’s 17 miles of pristine beaches, rolling hills, and quaint lighthouses make it the perfect place to unwind and reconnect with nature.

Visiting Rhode Island has been another meaningful stop on my 50 States Challenge and though it may be the smallest state, it left one of the biggest impressions on me. There’s something incredibly special about the way Rhode Island blends coastal charm with deep history and genuine warmth. From exploring Newport’s grand mansions to enjoying quiet moments by the ocean, I found myself constantly reminded of how diverse and beautiful each state can be in its own unique way.
